CROWNS · A Gospel Musical Story For Us All

Church is a place that unites people in a way like nothing else. It doesn’t matter where you end because if you started in the church you’ll always have it in you. That’s something the gospel musical CROWNS definitely confirmed for me this weekend. This play was able to take me back to my roots all while reminding me of who I am and who I’m meant to be.

A few weeks ago I was checking out things to do for Memorial Day weekend here in Fayetteville and realized that a play I’d been wanting to see for  a few years was actually in production right here at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre.  I knew I couldn’t pass this up.

There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms. The tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery to the New Testament and current fashion. When Grandma Shaw introduces young Yolanda to her circle of “Hat Queens,” Yolanda learns that she’s not as alone in the world as she had once felt. This Gospel musical is a show that will stir your soul and inspire you to connect to your roots. Featuring the songs you love: Ain’t That Good News, Marching to Zion, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, and Wade in the Water. Directed by Donna Bradby (The Wiz).

Who will love it? You, your mother-in-law and everyone you know. This show is a Gospel-filled great time for anyone with “Hattitude.” PG13

I paired up with a friend of mine and we grabbed tickets for one of the first shows. We were beyond excited to go because we are two moms who center our lives around family and kids so this night was going to be all about us!

Crowns – A Gospel Musical

Crowns has been playing across the nation in different theaters and venues. I heard about it a few years ago and knew it was a story I could find myself in. As a child practically born on the altar I know the history of a church woman’s hat first hand.

My Grandmother, Aunts, Cousins and just about everyone I knew in our small family church took their hats very seriously. It wasn’t a game. Every season they would all get the latest styles and every church event was a chance to chow them off.

Yet in our culture a woman’s hat is so much more than a fashion statement. It’s a covering, an act of reverence and a way to connect to the women before us.

Crowns takes the history of hats and brings it to the stage in a way that anyone and everyone can relate to. Now I don’t want to give the full story because this is a play I want you to see for yourself!

Cape Fear Regional Theatre

Cape Fear Regional Theatre is located in the Haymont (Hay Mount) area of Fayetteville. Haymont has that ‘small southern town‘ quality and so does this theater. I have been here several times for Christmas productions as part of my Kiddies field trips but this is my first time seeing a show on my own – but I’m positive it will not be my last.

The Cape Fear Regional Theatre will be showcasing Crown now through June 3rd. Go ahead, get your fanciest hat and your best friend and go see why this show is a show for us all.

What’s the last stage musical you saw?
