Cape Fear Regional Theatre - Best In The House - It's Me, Tee

Cape Fear Regional is taking steps to make sure we all get the best . . the best in the house that is – the place every theatergoer wants to be and be seen!.

Recently I had the chance to get to hear all the details about the new & improved CFRT experience. I know, I know most times when you hear that phrase it’s more like old and redone but this is not like most times.

Cape Fear Regional Theatre has set out to give every member of their audience the best experience possible by making their entire theatre the best in the house with new seating, new sound, and new air while continuing to give Broadway-quality performances unique to our community stage.

To get started CFRT has completely gutted out the theatre we have all come to love but don’t despair – out with the old is making way for a new I know you will all love.

The Best Seats.

Thanks to an anonymous $250,000 Jumpstart Grant Cape Fear Regional Theatre is giving every audience member the best seat in the house!

Taking the old seats to a new level going from red to luxurious blue and increasing the width of seats from 19 to 21, 22 or 23 or 24 inches and depth of each row will gain at least 6 seats from the knees to the back of the chair.

The new seats have been sponsored by patrons dubbed by CFRT as the Seat Squad. Thanks to their donations the theatre needs less than 100 seats left to complete the projects. You can join the Seat Squad yourself and help make sure every seat at CFRT is the best seat in the house!

The Best Sound.

Cape Fear Regional has brought in Sound Designer, Rob Kaplowitz, to give every CFRT show a quality of sound that will finally match the quality of showmanship and performance we have come to enjoy and expect from our theatre.

Rob Kaplowitz explained how in theatre sound can be a bizarre disappointment that theatergoers may not even understand. He called it ‘the perfect storm of not getting it [sound] right in a space’. Rob’s goals for the CFRT project were ‘to create for everyone an equally good and equal sound system’.

Modeled around the architecture, material, and layout of the theatre’s entire space, Rob has designed a sound system to give the audience an experience of sound equal regardless of where they sit.

Rob’s newly designed system will also give the mixer (person in charge of creating the unique mix of sound for each show) the ability to achieve the sound designer’s vision night after night.

Regardless of the performer’s delivery, audience participation, or any other outside factors that could influence sound changes. Rob takes all of this into account as he creates a system that will maintain quality for every ear in the audience!

In all honesty, this is my layman breakdown of some of the very technical explanations Rob shared behind his sound design. I would never do it justice so instead, I’m just going to share it with you to hear for yourself.

The Best Air.

Yep. You read that right. Air. Cape Fear Regional Theatre hasn’t stopped at the seats or the sound. They are bringing in a brand new air filtration system designed to be sure even the air quality is the best in the house!

Of all the announcements made during this special Patron event a comment made by Rob Kapolwitz about the importance of a regional theatre resonated with me the most:

“The theatre that’s made out of the community that is for the community and is about a mirror of the community – that’s the theatre that is the most important in my mind.”

The Best is Still To Come: Murder For Two

Although the renovations, updates, and upgrades aren’t scheduled to be completed until Fall of 2021, you can still experience a show performed in a way only the talent of Cape Fear Regional Theatre can give.

If you saw my recap of Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill you know CFRT was able to transform an outdoor venue – specifically an auto repair lot – into the night club Emerson’s where I had the chance to hear Janeta Jackson bring the last months of Billie Holiday’s life to the stage in her own unique way.

Cape Fear is preparing to do it again with their presentation of Murder For Two scheduled to take place at another local venue. This time the production team will transform Dobb’s Oxendine Motors into the scene of a murder you don’t want to miss.
