The perfect southern night is a blend of grass beneath your feet, a warm breeze, good company, and sweet tea. Sweet Tea Shakespeare gives you that and then some!
Last weekend I had the chance to attend my very first Sweet Tea Shakespeare production: The Merry Wives of Windsor. As a true lover of words, art, and creativity I was excited to see a Shakespearean piece brought to life.
I’d heard whispers, seen glimpses and even watched a stray video clip here and there but I still wasn’t sure what to expect as I walked through the garden gate of 1897 Poe House.
The Setting
It was as if I walked through time to the premiere night of a William Shakespeare original. The tent, rugs on the ground, pillows and cozy atmosphere took me there in an instant.
Thanks to a Sweet Tea Pro, I got a few tips on having the perfect Sweet Tea evening including $1 refills with the purchase of a souvenir glasses and catered plates by Blackstone Smokehouse and the cool rugs and pillows placed all around the garden letting you sit just about anywhere – really. Like anywhere!

Shakespearean Style
The night started with a pre-show of music and comedy. Once the show started it was as if we were sitting in a true Shakespearean production. The Sweet Tea cast is diverse and talented mixing the perfect blend of traditional Shakespearean style with a modern twist.

One way they do this is by ‘doubling‘ which is when one actor plays multiple roles within the same play. Shakespeare also made a common practice of casting women in male roles and males as women.
Seems like Shakespeare’s audience would become fans of certain actors and wanted to see them as often as possible throughout a play even if as different characters. I loved it!
The Merry Wives Of Windsor
Now if you have read The Merry Wives of Windsor the short of the story is about Sir John trying to seduce two wives of Windsor at the same time. Unbeknownst to him, the wives team up to prove trying to deceive them may not have been the wisest plan.

As with many of Shakespeare’s plays, there is a story within a story for this play. As the daughter of Mistress Paige – Ann is pursued by three different courters
Although this was the final night for this play Sweet Tea Shakespeare is not over yet! You still have a chance to have a sweet southern evening of your own with any one of their upcoming shows!
